The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer: Contributing to Earth Observations for over 40 Years

چکیده
Abstract The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR), which have been flying on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) polar-orbiting weather satellites since 1978, provide the longest global record of Earth observations from a visible–infrared imager. Experience gained through AVHRRs has integral to development new-generation sensors such as Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Visible Infrared Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), associated data processing algorithms in United States, well similar class sensor by space agencies around world. Over four decades vital for studying its change. MetOp-C satellite that was successfully launched 2018 carries last AVHRR. This article reviews contributions AVHRR building continuous over 40 years occasion launch.

Using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) to calibrate advanced very high resolution radiometer reflectance channels
[1] A series of 10 advanced very high resolution radiometers (AVHRRs) flown on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s polar-orbiting satellites for over 20 years has provided data suitable for many quantitative remote sensing applications. To be useful for geophysical research, each radiometer must be accurately calibrated, which poses problems in the AVHRR reflectance channel...
متن کاملBayesian Cloud Detection for 37 Years of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Area Coverage (GAC) Data
Cloud detection is a source of significant errors in retrieval of sea surface temperature (SST). We apply a Bayesian cloud detection scheme to 37 years of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Area Coverage (GAC) data, which is an important source of multi-decadal global SST information. The Bayesian scheme calculates a probability of clear-sky for each image pixel, conditiona...
متن کاملChange Detection of the Vegetation Cover based upon Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Data
The goal of the current study is to map location and extent of the changes in vegetation in northeastern portion of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia due to the 1991 Gulf War. AVHRR data acquired in different dates were the main source of information. Changes in vegetation during three different time periods may be related to smoke plume impact and / or military activities. The change detection analy...
متن کاملEstimating and Removing Sensor-Induced Correlation From Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Satellite Data
In order to estimate the spatial covariance structure of sea surface temperature (SST) using advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) satellite data, autocorrelation induced by the sensor itself must be determined and then removed before the correlative properties of SST per se can be found. Sensor-induced autocorrelation arises from (1) partially redundant sampling and (2) a nonideal i...
متن کاملEstimating regional forest cover in East Texas using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data
This study tested the degree to which single date, near-nadir AVHRR image could provide forest cover estimates comparable to the phase I estimates obtained from the traditional photo-based techniques of the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. FIA program is part of the United States Department of Agriculture-Forest Service (USFS). A six-county region in east Texas was selected for this...
